It's time to formally close this chapter of my life. The year away has been an interesting and learning-filled one. I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity to spend the year away, relatively stress-free and free from responsibility.

The most memorable thing about my year was being able to catch up with precious old friends, to spend time with them. If I am even half of what they are in demonstrating hospitality, love and kindness, I am a better person.

It's now time to move on and time to be an adult again back (:(() at pumpkinmagic

Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty is an amazing piece... he is truly a genius! Had the priviledge to catch it at the BBC Prom yesterday. Sitting on the floor in the arena in the middle of the Royal Albert Hall and having a "picnic" is truly another enriching experience! Hahahahhahha...

I am DONE! Hehe. Somehow, I expected to feel exhilarated, but nooooo..... nothing. Well I suppose it's because the journey up until yesterday been a slow and steady trudge and unlike the exams where there was a build up for an intense few hours in the very end , the deadline for the BB invasion has always been on the horizon. Anyhow it's all over now! And it's slowly sinking in how soon I'll be back on home soil.

Hmmm, what shall I do today? Such a wonderful feeling this lack anything to do... hahhha. I'm treasuring it while it lasts since all good things come to an end. :P

PS. There's some crazy digging by construction workers just outside my building causing a deafening din!! Thank goodness I need not worry about concentrating on my paper... the noise is driving me a little nuts. :P

PPS. I've received 4 free tickets to attend the Visa 2012 Olympic Party. Hahaahhaha.. o well.

PPPS. Realised last Sunday that it was going to be my last session at HTB. I'm gonna miss it!!!! LOADS!! It's been such a wonderful, enriching experience. A lovely blend of worship and grounded teaching.

I was totally wowed by the spectacular performance put up at the 2008 Olympics! Although not a Chinese national, I too, felt a small tinge of pride. :) I loved that there was a little boy from Sichuan who survived the earthquake as part of the parade in remembrance of those who perished.

Some books are worth re-reading, if nothing else for the simple reason that they contain words of wisdom and insight easily forgotten over the passage of time. Here's one to start with:

1) The Time Bind by A. R. Hochschild (1997) - because the realities of managing effective work-family balance will probably be more relevant later on.

2) The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson (1963) - inspiring account of God's calling, compassion and sacrifice.

3) Through Gates of Splendour by Elisabeth Elliot (1981) - the cost of obedience

The idea of more time for family life seems to have died, gone to heaven, and become an angel of an idea.

The social world that draws a person's allegiance also imparts a pattern to time. The more attached we are to the world of work the more it's dealines, its cycles, ita pauses and interruptions shape our lives and the more family time is forced to accommodate to the pressures of work.

Parents often feel they owe their children a time-debt and make up for it by indulging them with treats or softened rules in exchange for missed time together.

Such is the world we live in where the social worlds of home and work reverse. Many have grown up in this world where one knows not an alternative. Can one possible reverse the balance of work and non-work even if one wanted to?

Someone told me recently that romance has a shelf life of 5 years and that after that only love remains. Me thinks: What is love without romance?!

Interesting... it never occured to me that romance had an expiry date, I've always believed that romance and love go hand in hand. How sad, this notion. But then again, is it not a more realistic point of view? I dunno. Things are far greyer these days. Nevertheless, I choose to believe as I did before that one cannot separate love from romance. ;)

Anyways, my friend's statement peaked my curiosity and I Googled "what is romance?" and "is romance real?". Here're some snippets of what I found... some are hilarious!

A measure of heart

I've come to realise that we are all given a certain measure of heart. Once poured out, can never be refilled... not up to its full measure, at least not over a short period of time. I've seen this happen to so many. But why, I wonder? Surely man was with more than just a little elasticity. Surely as man was made versatile, man's heart would've been made so too?

The answer I believe is that man cannot heal on his own, simply because man did not make himself. He needs to go back to his maker to be made whole again... for the cracks to be filled and a new coat of paint applied. Man needs to arrive at a place were man seeks restoration from the one who began it all.

There is but no other way for man to be made whole again, to restore his measure of heart.

Christmas in Barcelona was great and I highly recommend celebrating birthdays on holiday. ;)

CY was down in London over the weekend and after Barcelona, it was nice winding down with an old friend. We caught up with each other and with a couple of other old friends, did some girlie shopping (Winter Sale's ON!!!), watched a funny version of The Nutcracker and a ridiculous Brit sitcom called Little Britain and basically just chilled out. It helped somewhat with the feeling of homesickness as the year ends and a new year begins. It's been an eventful, challenging and blessed year and I look forward to all the exciting and new things I am certain will be part of 2008. Bring it on baby... woohoo!!

Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake performed by the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre with Irina Kolesnikova as Odette (her feet have an amazing arch!) was absolutely, absolutely amazing :))). Such a beautiful ballet.

There's going to be another version performed by the English National Ballet next summer... see here.

I've been inspired to do my QT regularly again... don't know why I've resisted it for so long.

On a different note, it's been ages and ages!! Here's what I've been up to in reverse chronology.. or as I remember it ;)

Last weekend:
T'was Rugby Finals weekend!!

CY was down from Boston and it was great catching up with her, YY and W. We ate SO much over the weekend... tim sum on Sat and Jap on Sunday. CL's farewell was on Sat evening and it was lovely meeting up again after such a long time. It seems like we've all not changed very much since uni... apprearance-wise that is. Visited Hillsongs with CY on Sunday and realised that it's really not for me. hehe. :P

Stuff which happened over the week:
First seminars were fun (never thought I'd say this!). Took the bus the wrong direction and ended up being 30mins late for lecture. My coursemate asked me if I had overslept! :P I actually left the house an hour before class... sigh. Haha. Finally found a place JL and I like! It's round the corner from Canada Water station. Can't wait to move in!

Went for CU on campus mid-week... and it was full of undergrads... :P Don't get me wrong, they're great to be with but man, they make me feel so old!

Hari Raya weekend! Went with JL for the Open House hosted by the Msian Embassy.... great food! I especially liked the peanut sauce they served (no satay though.. :P). Met some of the other scholars there. I had 2 rounds of food... hahah, just wait, I'm going to pile on the kgs.

Hmmm... can't remember much of what went on before but I'll be going to the London Dungeons tommorrow... can't wait! Esp since it's Halloween this weekend and I think they've made a special effort to jazz up the rides. Hehehe. Will be spending the weekend with HC and family... yaaay!

So far, the course has been really interesting although there's a tonne of reading to do. No complaints though. God has been good. :) Missing all my loved ones at home... mwah! xxx

Since it's only going to be a 12-month stint.. I haaave to:

1) Watch a footie match - live!
2) Go to Alton Towers
3) Visit Ronnie Scotts
4) Watch a ballet - Done! Swan Lake was amazing! Now I wanna see The Nutcracker Suite!
5) Watch a number of musicals - Done!
6) Attend some pop concerts - Done!
7) Do the museum thang - WIP
8) Visit Spain and Prague
9) Go on the London Eye (in summer)
10) Go to Legoland!

I'm sure the list will grow ;)

3 weeks to my break from work and 5 weeks to go before I hop on a plane to London!!! Yippee!!! Will miss home and everyone here tho :P hehe.
